Review "Jedes Jahr im Juni" (Dear Emmie Blue) by Lia Louis

Hi guys, I know, two posts in two days, what is this insanity? 
Just to warn you, this is not going to be a regular thing, but I wanted to get this review up as fast as possible, so I thought I might as well post it right away :)
You know the drill from my review of Project Hail Mary (which you can read here), I will first write my German review because I was kindly sent this German edition of Dear Emmie Blue and then I will write the English review so you can all read it, I hope that works for you, because it is the best I could come up with.

Vielen Dank an das Bloggerportal für das kostenlose Rezensionsexemplar. Wie immer ist meine Meinung ehrlich und unvoreingenommen.

Für Emmie ist Lucaas die ganz große Liebe - seit dem Tag, als sie einen roten Luftballon mit einem Brief in den Himmel steigen ließ und Lucas ihr antwortete. Emmie weiß, dass er ihr Seelenverwandter ist, und doch hat sie es nie übers Herz gebracht, Lucas ihre Gefühle zu gestehen. 
Jedes Jahr treffen sich die beiden am selben Ort. 
Jedes Jahr hat er ein ganz besonderes Geschenk für sie. 
Und jedes Jahr hofft Emmie aufs Neue, dass Lucas sich auch in sie verlieben wird. 
Doch dieses Jahr ist alles anders. Denn was Lucas ihr verkündet, lässt Emmies Herz in tausend Stücke zerbrechen. Hat sie ihn damit für immer verloren?" (Klappentext) 

Man fällt sofort mit der Tür ins Haus, oder soll ich sagen, den Hauptkonflikt. Emmie ist in ihren besten Freund Lucas verliebt, der ihr aber leider nicht den erwünschten Antrag macht, sondern sie bittet, seine Tauzeugin zu werden. Das gebrochene Herz von Emmie habe ich wirklich zu deutlich gespürt und ich war von Anfang an sehr interessiert daran, wie die Story sich entwickelt. Ich muss auch zugeben, dass ich dachte, die Story wird ziemlich banal und leicht vorherzusehen, aber das war tatsächlich überhaupt nicht der Fall (gut, nach 2/3 vom Buch konnte ich mir dann denken, was passiert, aber dennoch hat mich der Twist im Epilog sehr emotional gemacht). 

Emmies Story hat deutlich mehr Tiefgang, als man zu Beginn vielleicht denkt. Themen wie Missbrauch, Verlust, Victim blaming, und vieles mehr werden thematisiert und vor allem die emotionalen Auswirkungen sehr deutlich klar gestellt. 
Was als einfacher, witziger Liebesroman anfing entwickelte sich schnell in eine herzerwärmende Geschichte über Familie, Trauma and Selbstfindung und ich war begeistert. 

Die Tatsache, dass Emmie sich erst Zeit gegeben hat, um zu heilen und ihre andere Prioritäten in den Griff zu bekommen hat mich zutiefst beeindruckt, da es etwas ist, was eine Liebesbeziehung für mich immer sehr viel authentischer und reif macht. Emmie geht durch unglaublich viel durch und kann nicht einfach durch einen attraktiven Mann geheilt und gerettet werden, sondern muss mit ihrem Leben erst mal selbst klar kommen, bevor sie sich auf die Liebe einlässt. 
Diese Art zu wachsen kommt mir in vielen Liebesgeschichten oft zu kurz, deswegen wollte ich das einfach mal hervorheben. 

Ich konnte mich nicht besonders gut in Emmie hineinversetzen, aber es war schön, ihre Geschichte zu beobachten und ihre Ängste und Sorgen zu verstehen. Von den Geldproblemen, die sie keinem zugeben möchte, zu der Suche nach ihrem leiblichen Vater, sie hat einiges mit sich herum zu schleppen und es wurde für mich als Leserin sehr deutlich, in welchem emotionalen Tumult sie sich befand. 
Auch Lucas war für mich von Anfang an eher ein schwammiger Charakter (ich werde nicht darauf eingehen, wohin sich das Gefühl entwickelt hat), aber die Freundschaft zwischen den beiden und vorallem die Rückblicke zur Schulzeit waren wunderschön. 
Das Ende des Buchs hat mich wie gesagt ab etwa 2/3 dann nicht mehr unbedingt überrascht, aber es war dennoch spannend genug gestaltet, dass ich mir nicht sicher war, ob wir das Ende wirklich so bekommen wie ich es mir wünsche. 

Alles in Allem ist "Jedes Jahr im Juni" ein sehr tiefgängiger Liebesroman, der sich auf viel mehr konzentriert als nur den perfekten Mann zu finden. Es geht um Selbstliebe, Freundschaft und Familie und die Entwicklung der Hauptcharakterin ist eine wunderschöne Reise, die ich gerne beobachtet hatte. Auch wenn es zwischendurch etwas holprig wurde, so ist es doch ein Happy-End Roman, den ich an Leser*innen empfehlen kann, die gerne eine Träne oder zwei vor Freude und vor Berührtheit weinen. 

Das Buch bekommt deswegen 4.5 von 5 Sternen von mir.

Review Dear Emmie Blue by Lia Louis

When, a few weeks later, Lucas Moreau does just that, the two teens develop an instant rapport, going from trading emails to a deep and enduring friendship. Fourteen years later, Lucas asks Emmie to be his "best woman" at his upcoming wedding. Emmie accepts the honor, but must face the fact that her long-simmering romantic feelings for Lucas can never be revealed." (Goodreads)

With this one you're immediately dropped into the main conflict. Emmie is in love with her best friend Lucas, but instead of the long awaited marriage proposal, he asks her to become his best-woman in his wedding. I really felt for Emmie's heartbreak, the way it was written was very clear, and I was intrigued to see where the story would take us. I have to admit, I thought this story would be veryy straight forward and easy to guess, but that actually wasn't the case (okay, about 2/3 of the way I kinda figured out what would happen, but the twist at the end was still very emotional for me). 

Emmie's story was a lot deeper than I had expected. Things like abuse, abandonment, victim blaming and more are discussed and especially the emotional repercussions of her trauma were very well and clearly written. 
What started as a funny, ordinary romance novel quickly developed into a heartwarming story about family, trauma and self-discovery and I was hooked. 
The fact that Emmie gave herself the time to heal, overcome her trauma, and figure out her life really impressed me, because that's something that makes love stories much more authentic, mature and healthy, at least for me personally. Emmie has to go through so much and can't just be rescued and fixed by a handsome guy, but instead has to deal with her life first before she's ready for love. 
That sort of character development often falls a little short in romances, so I wanted to mention it here. 

I didn't really relate to Emmie that well, but it was still beautiful to watch her story unfold and understand her fears and sorrows. From money problems that she can't admit to in front of rich Lucas, to finding her real dad, she has a lot to deal with and for me her emotional chaos was very clear and easy to grasp. 
I also wasn't that keen on Lucas at the beginning (I won't go into more detail), but their friendship was beautiful, especially the way it used to be and the things you learn about their past and Emmie's school time. 

 As I've said before, I guessed the ending about 2/3 through the story, but it was still written in a way, that had me wondering if we would actually get the ending that I had been hoping for. 

Overall Dear Emmie Blue is a really deep romance novel that focuses on so much more than finding the perfect man. It deals with trauma, self-love, friendship and family and Emmies journey was one I happily joined and watched. Though there were a few bumps in the road, I'd still recommend this Happy-End romance to anyone who loves to shed a tear or two (both happy and sad ones). 
So, 4.5 out of 5 from me.

I hope you enjoyed this review, because I really enjoy writing longer reviews at the moment. It just gives me so much more room to talk about books.
