Review: Der Astronaut ("Project Hail Mary") - Andy Weir

Hi there, sorry for the slightly inconsistent uploads, I'm currently trying to figure out what I want my blog to actually be and whether to move it to a different platforms (Blogger has given me a bit of a headache lately...). 
As for today's post it is a bit of a different one, because I'm reviewing a German ARC I received and so obviously I'll write the review in German. But fear not, at the end of the German one you'll find the exact same review in English. I hope this works for you because it is the easiest way for me to include both in one post. Now, let's get into it. 

Rezension "Der Astronaut" von Andy Weir

"Der Marsianer" von Andy Weir ist eins meiner absoluten Lieblingsbücher, deshalb konnte ich einfach nicht anders, als diese Neuerscheinung sofort zu lesen. Dazu kommt noch das absolut umwerfende Cover, ein Traum.

Wir beobachten in 2 gegeläufigen Zeitsträgen Ryland Grace, Lehrer und verstoßener Wissenschaftler, der ohne jegliche Erinnerungen in einem Raumschiff mitten im nirgenwo aufwacht. Seine Crewmitglieder sind verstorben und einzig ein medizinischer Versorgungsroboter steht Grace als Gesellschaft zur Verfügung. 

Wie schon in "Der Marsianer" überzeugte mich Andy Weir mit seinem Sinn für Humor und Sarkasmus. Schon die ersten Kapitel hatten mich mehrfach zum Lachen gebracht. Ryland Grace ist ein angenehmer Hauptcharakter. Er zeigt Emotionen, Verletzlichkeit und Angst, aber auch unglaublichen Mut und es war so spannend, seinen klaren Kopf sowohl bei der Arbeit als auch bei der Verzweiflung zu beobachten. Durch die Erinnerungen, die Leser*innen zur selben Zeit wie Grace erfahren, bildet sich nach und nach ein sehr eindeutiges Bild von einem Mann ab, der völlig außerhalb seiner Komfortzone ist und diese Situation dennoch erstaunlich gut meistert. 

Anfangs war ich etwas besorgt, was die wissenschaftlichen Details anging (ich studiere schließlich nicht ohne Grund Literatur), doch die Informationen wurden so verständlich vermittelt, dass ich damit weder überfordert war, noch mich dumm fühlen musste. 

Es gab ein, zwei Aspekte, die für mich dann doch etwas zu abgespaced waren (ich möchte nicht spoilern, ihr müsst das wohl selbst herausfinden), aber ich muss natürlich dazu sagen, dass ich keine erfahrene Sci Fi Leserin bin und hier sehr weit außerhalb meiner Komfortzone unterwegs war. 

Während mich das Ende sehr berührt hat (allgemein hat das Buch sehr mit Spannung und Emotionen gespielt), war es doch leider nicht das, was ich mir persönlich erhofft hatte. 

Alles in Allem ein sehr unterhaltsames, spekulatives Abenteuer, das 4 von 5 Sternen verdient hat, ideal für Leser*innen, die Frank Schätzings "Der Schwarm" und "Der Marsianer" mochten.

The Martian by Andy Weir is one of my all-time favourite books, so when I saw he had this new book coming out I just had to read it. Also, this German cover is so gorgeous, I mean, come on.

In two timelines we get to see teacher and disgraced scientist Ryland Grace's life unfold and learn how he ended up on a spaceship in the middle of nowhere one day, crew dead and mummified, and with only a medical service robot keeping him company. 

Just like in The Martian Andy Weir's sarcastic, funny style of writing had me laughing out loud from the very first chapter. Ryland Grace is such an easygoing main character. While he's emotional and vulnerable, he also shows so much strength and bravery. It was honestly so good to watch his mind work despite his fear. Esecially when his memories unfold for the reader at the same time as for him, it is obvious just how well he's dealing with this situation that is clearly so far out of his comfort zone. 

At first I was worried about all the scientific terms and details (I'm a Literature major for a reason) but they were explained so well and very accessible, so I wasn't overwhelmed of feeling dumb at all. 

There were a few things that were a bit too far out there for me (I won't tell you exactly what, but that unexpected Ally had five legs...), but then again, I'm not an experienced Sci-Fi reader and so some things were simply a bit too far out of my comfort zone. 
While the ending was quite emotional (as was a lot of this book, very suspenseful and emotional) it still left me feeling a little underwhelmed and I had kinda expected something else. 

Overall a fast paced, gripping 4/5 Sci-Fi adventure that I'd recommend to people who enjoyed Frank Schätzing's The Swarm and The Martian.
